Well, school is off to a fast start. In the first 4 days of school, I have read 150 pages of pointless crap that is making my head hurt. On top of that, I have had to discuss some ethical dilemmas with people who do not believe in God. Let me share.....
Ok, so my Ethics class is about ethics as compared to Socrates and Plato. Well, this first story I read talked about piety, which is basically morality. The question was posed in the story: "Is it right because God commands it, or does God command it because it is right." My professor went on to say, that there is no way that someone can say that it is right because God commands it. First off, back in Socrates and Plato's day, they believed in many gods. So, my professor holds that theory - there are many gods. What a horrible theory, right? Anyway, my professor's argument is that you cannot say it is right because God commands it because God could command that rape, murder, and child molestation is right. Even more horrible of a theory, right? I couldn't believe that someone would think this. So.... without throwing a lot of religion into the mix, I was trying to think of how I could argue this point. I decided to google the definition of god/God. According to Princeton University, the definition of god/God was a supernatural being that is perfect and omnipotent. I already know that since God is perfect, he would not command that rape, murder, and child molestation is right. But, this is exactly the definition I needed - from a well-known, non-christian university - to make my argument legitimate. So, regardless of your beliefs in gods/God, taking this defintion from Princeton, you cannot tell me that a god/God would command rape, murder, or child molestation. The definition itself includes the word perfect. Rape, murder, and child molestation is not perfect. Several of my classmates have replied to my posting, but my instructor has not. I am not sure if he will post anything, but I have a feeling this class is going to make me mad a lot. I really can't throw a lot of religion into my arguments, because it is not a religion class. But, I am definitely going to argue something totally isane as the comment "there is no way someone can say that it is right because it is commanded by God." It is right because it is commanded by God!!!

I love how college professors think their opinions on unrelated subjects are classroom material. You should ask, first, which version of "God" he's referring to and then for examples citing a command to ever do any of these things. I garauntee there are none. The only thing he could even argue is murder and the dictionary defines murder and killing as two entirely different things. Nevermind the fact that the concept of "God" is something superior to us and existing as an omnipotent creator. Even he could prove rape, murder, or molestation (which he can't) it doesn't even mean the same thing coming from a superior being. It's like if I were to "murder" a spider. While we're on the subject though, do you think Mary and God...um...did it?
Oh, and the bit about Plato and Socrates is irrelevant. They thought many, many things that have been proven untrue since. Their belief in multiple deities was also a cultural belief that is predated thousands of years by Judaism, the religion Christianity was born from. Religion didn't begin in a history book. It began with the first being created that was capable of worship.
If my professor decides to argue with me, these are some good points to bring up. He has gotten involved in a couple of the other arguments of some of my classmates. However, he has decided to leave me alone. He is probably going to hate me, but he cannot grade me based on what he thinks. He has to grade me on how I present my argument.
